The Sapphire Coast’s estuaries — Merimbula Lake, the Pambula River and Lake, and Wonboyn near the Victorian border — are known for oysters. Inland, the Bega Valley is famous dairy country. Add fresh fish from Eden and Bermagui and you eat very well here.

Oysters

  • Buy direct from farm sheds around Merimbula and Pambula; some offer tastings or shucked oysters to take away.
  • Many waterfront restaurants in Merimbula serve local Sydney rock oysters.
  • Ask where the oysters came from — local producers are proud of their estuaries.

Seafood

  • Eden wharf — fresh fish and fish and chips by the boats.
  • Bermagui harbour — fish co-op style takeaway and harbourside cafes.
  • Merimbula — the widest choice of restaurants.
