Bermagui and the Blue Pool

A fishing town at the northern end of the Sapphire Coast, with one of Australia’s most photographed ocean pools.

Bermagui sits at the mouth of the Bermagui River, about an hour north of Merimbula. It is known for game fishing, a lively harbour with fresh seafood, and the Blue Pool, an ocean rock pool built into the cliffs just south of town.

Things to do

  • Blue Pool — a large, free ocean pool set into the rock platform. Swim, snorkel, or just enjoy the view. Waves wash over the wall in big swells.
  • Bermagui Harbour — watch the boats come in and eat fish and chips by the water.
  • Camel Rock — a distinctive rock formation on the beach north of town, best at sunrise.
  • Horse Head Rock — reached on a walk from Wallaga Lake, another striking coastal formation.
  • Wallaga Lake — a large lake north of town, good for paddling and birdwatching.

Visiting the Blue Pool safely

The pool is fed by the ocean, so conditions change with the tide and swell. On calm days it is perfect for laps and snorkelling; in big seas, waves break over the wall and it is best enjoyed from the steps above. There are change rooms and parking at the top of the cliff. Arrive early on summer days, when parking fills quickly.

Fishing town character

Bermagui has long been a base for game fishing, and the harbour remains busy with commercial and charter boats. Walking the harbour at the end of the day, when boats return, is one of the simple pleasures of a visit.
